Humana Netherlands support education and training in Angola

Humana Netherlands has been supporting projects in Africa for many years. In Angola the focus is currently on vocational training to increase the number of qualified personnel, and on the training and organisation of small farmers in order to improve agricultural production and create food security. In the field of vocational training Humana NL is backing the Basic Academic and Technical Schools (known as EPP) in Huambo and in Caxito. Both schools embarked on a new line of theoretical and practical training in 2011. Corresponding to 7th, 8th and 9th grade, this new type of education teaches young people traditional school subjects in an modern and exciting way, combined with vocational training in one of three vocations. At the schools, they also get a range of experiences which promote their personal development, and qualifies them to enter the labour market in a number of much needed professions.

EPP Huambo offers the vocations: Environment Promoter and Information and Communication Assistant, while EPP Caxito prepares young people as Modern Cooks, Energy Assistants and Food Producers.

Angola’s agricultural potential remains underdeveloped. Humana NL is committed to addressing this problem by supporting a farmers’ clubs project in the province of Bengo. The project started in late 2012 with an initial goal of some 750 farmers organised in 15 clubs. The aim of the project is to organise the farmers and provide training to enable them to increase their production for own consumption and the market. Through training in new farming techniques, demonstration fields to practice these techniques, help with wells and pumps, crop diversification, rearing of livestock and marketing, the club members become more proficient farmers and can, in turn, pass on their knowledge to others.
