Empowering girls

The focus of the project is getting more girls to attend and complete primary school, thus helping the Government achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of free, equitable and quality primary education. ADPP’s Schools of the Teachers of the Future (EPFs) in Uige, Caxito, Bié, Huambo, Benguela and Londuimbali were selected to research the situation, and to run programs at 45 primary schools.

571 students in Team 2015 at the six EPFs have been trained in questions of gender and girls’ education, and have conducted preliminary surveys in communities around the schools. Team 2015 is currently in the 2nd Year of studies, and the students spend three days a week over a total of 24 weeks at local primary schools, assisting in the classroom in the morning and organizing extracurricular activities in the afternoon. They are thus ideally situated to implement the project, and will be able to use the experience gained when on long-term teaching practice at rural schools in their final year. Not that gender is a new issue at ADPP schools. For years, EPFs across the country have sought to enroll equal numbers of male and female students, and have promoted equality and equity among the student body and within the community.
Results so far include the development of five training programs, dealing with gender equality and equity, sexual and reproductive health, youth clubs, girls’ rights and community mobilization. 571 students have participated in training and 45 primary schools are on board, with all relevant authorities enthusiastic about the idea.
Still to come are Pedagogical Sessions with in-service teachers at the 45 schools, mobilization of pupils, parents and teachers to improve sanitary conditions at the schools, and awareness campaigns in the community. The latter will include theater, sport, youth clubs, Open Sundays at EPFs and community actions.
