In 2010, as a result of a partnership between the Ministry of Education, KOICA and ADPP, Kwanza Norte Educational Center was established. The Center houses two schools, Teacher Training School and Polytechnic School (Basic Academic and Technical School) and serves as both an educational as well as a cultural center for the growing population of Lucala. Team 2015, who completed their studies in 2016, graduated in January 2018.

Activities and Results of the Project

Teacher Training School Kwanza Norte currently has three teams of students:

  • Team 2016: 61 students, 13 female and 48 male
  • Team 2017: 104 students, 22 female and 82 male.
  • Team 2018: 175 students, 49 female and 126 male.

Impact
Teacher Training School Kwanza Norte has an impact on the students, on education in the province, and on communities around the school itself as well as those around the primary schools where 2nd and 3rd Year students undertake teaching practice. 1st Year students learn rapidly to respect each other, to socialize and to develop team spirit. Through the core group, they learn to work in teams, to discuss ideas and to listen to others. Practical work, such as cleaning, cooking, gardening, and so forth, is helping the students get into the habit of working and of being part of the solution of whatever is in hand. Work in the communities helps train community leadership skills. By the time the students reach 2nd Year, they have matured considerably. The study trip together with more than a year of socializing, learning, and training aid this process, and result in mature young people who excel at their job. They are united and capable of organizing practical and study tasks for themselves. Now they are learning to work with pupils, teachers and headmasters. They speak well in public, can voice their opinions, and teach classes. Thanks to the nature and content of the teacher training program, final year students achieve a level of competence as community developers and mobilizers that contributes to their effectiveness as teachers. Graduates from Team 2015 bear witness to the effect of the program. Many are preparing to present their candidature to enter the corps of state teachers, some are furthering their studies, others are self-employed, one is teaching 40 Pedagogical Sessions at Kwanza Norte and one is working at Polytechnic School Kwanza Norte. Among the aspects of the program the students highlighted were learning to deal with people from all kinds of backgrounds; learning to work as a team; living in communities and seeking solutions together with members of those communities; learning to do things for themselves, including specialist tasks they would previously call a professional to do; and spending a year away in teaching practice, where they became much more adult and responsible.
